Traditional Japanese Beauty, “Kyudo” (Japanese Archery)

The martial art showing Japanese beauty is Kyudo, I think. The form of Kyudo, the way to shoot the arrow, the thought of Kyudo itself, many things show Japanese beauty in Kyudo. I want to introduce Kyudo (Japanese Archery) club to you.

Many people do not know about Kyudo, so I will introduce Kyudo first. About Kyudo, it is self-accomplishment martial art, to keep the Heijyo-shin (the presence of mind), so it is the sports stand off the player inside. The highest aim of Kyudo is “Shin” (genuine), “Zen” (goodness), and “Bi” (beauty). There is lengthy history about
Kyudo in Japan. It was started way before Jyomon
period. The style of Kyudo is really changed from Jyomon period; it changed to sports, from the skill of living day-life. In these days, there are few players in Kyudo. The numbers of Kyudo player is decreasing more and more, and it is sad happening for me that many traditional Japanese sports or custom disappear… We, Japanese should protect our beautiful traditions from disappear.

From now on, I will introduce about Kyudo club in Kanda University. The aim of this club is very simple, to discipline individual Kyudo abilities. There are competitions in May and November (freshman competition), to get good result is also aims of this club. Studying Portuguese is Fun at Kanda!

In Kanda University, we have a lot of majors. In those, we have Portuguese major, the number of students is not big, but they are studying hard and have very nice friendship beyond years.

On last Thursday I visited to the meeting of studying Portuguese, which is held by Portuguese department. Going to the library, and I proceeded to the room. At 5:00 p.m., there were already students, and as one student called other students to come to a desk. It starts!!! In this lesson, I could hear speaking in Portuguese.

According to Syogo Takeshita, is the reader and the teacher of this meeting, said “Actually this meeting was held for students who couldn’t understand well in their classes at first.

However, now students who have strong motivation came!! It’s free to come or not, sometime the number of students may be 10 or more. Once a student whose major is Spanish has come!! So, everyone who is interested in Portuguese can participate!!

I usually chose newspapers and some magazines as studying materials, they help us to have interest in something in Brazil, and I usually chose a cooking book!!”

The day they are 6 people, but they are different years and an exchange student also presented. The exchange student is from Brazil and has just started to come to Kanda since last September. I heard that it is very reasonable for him, because he can teach Portuguese to Japanese students, and he can learn Japanese too!!

After finished interview, I felt good because I could see that they had own studying style and it has many good points. I could see that they are very good friends. I learned it is very important to have nice seniors and juniors in study!!
